The Best Birthday Ever

Holiday greetings one and all! I hope the weather in your corner of the world is not as extreme as it is here in the big city, where wind tunnels abound, the mercury sits below freezing, and apartment dwellers huddle ‘round the radiator. Yep, it’s not only end-of-the-year holiday season and shopping mania, but it is also  I took my first breath on this fine planet. The universe, as it always seems to do, miraculously bestowed some lovely surprises this past week, like:

  • The Boyfriend just discovered he is NOT allergic to all seafood after all, which means –YES!- we can eat sushi together.

  • After leaving my cheap-ass gloves in a cab, and pouting about it for a week, last night I was pleased to find a pair of beautiful, sleek, black, Italian deerskin designer mitt-covers in …a cab.

There’s are more goodies, but it goes with the rest of the music news:

I. GRAMMY NOMINATION AND DVD APPEARANCE

II. MEET ME ON MYSPACE.COM

III. SHOPPING FOR A GOOD CAUSE

I. GRAMMY NOMINATION??

Who, me? I wish! Actually, the Burning Spear record, “Our Music”, that I sang backup on back in the spring got a nod for “Best Reggae Album”. Also, someone asked me if I had seen myself on the DVD. Apparently, “Our Music” is one of those newfangled enhanced CD’s, meaning that if you flip the darn thing over, there’s a DVD on the other side. Well, sure enough, there in the chapter, “The Recording Session”, is footage showing me and the other singers learning the part from Spear, and also in the booth singing in 3-part reggae harmony. Cool. Check it out!

II. MEET ME ON MYSPACE.COM

Well, after two months on MySpace, the online networking community, I somehow have made over 100 “friends” from across the U.S.A. and across the pond. If you’re on MySpace, drop by and say hi, and let’s be friends! Even if you’re not, you can still check out my page and hear four songs, three of which are from my Seattle days, and one new song that I produced and co-wrote with Marc Copely, “Longing For You”. Please come visit: http://www.myspace.com/celiachavez - or send your friends!

III. SHOPPING FOR A GOOD CAUSE

So, in the charitable holiday spirit, I wanted to let everyone know about a not-for-profit organization in the New York area that does an amazing job of reaching out to the disabled population and their families. It’s YAI, the National Institute for People with Disabilities Network (www.yai.org). They run high-quality, highly successful programs - from early intervention for learning delayed children (including scholarships for families in need), to homes for Alzheimer’s patients, to job placement for the disabled.

I’d like to ask for your support for YAI, and it’s really simple: you can go to this link and shop as normal, at the same you’d always pay, but a portion of the purchase price will go to YAI’s programs. Online merchants like the Apple Store, Barnes & Noble, Godiva chocolates, Office Max, 1-800 Flowers, and many others participate. Rebates available also. Not just for the holidays--shop year-round!

Well, it’s been a couple of years now since I moved to NYC and I can’t believe how many of you have stuck with me, and even write me back after I send these newsletters. I enjoy getting news back from you as well, so please feel free to drop me a note and let me know what is new in your lives, what you think of the web site, the news updates, or the MySpace page…whatever. It’s just nice to hear from you.

Again, happy holidays, and much joy to you and your loved ones!

Blessings,

Celia
